Darker background in bubbles is just to emphasize the sudden change of mood for most cases. In present world, when they are using their old language the bubbles are indeed darker but more horizontal than vertical too - it's a lot more obvious in japanese as normal japanese text is vertical (from up to down) and when they speak in old language it's horizontal (from left to right).
